When my partner's brother announced that his family was expecting a new little one, I knew I wanted to make them a quilt to welcome baby. I thought for sure baby would be a boy, purely because I have a bunch of blue flannel stocked up since everyone I know seems to be having girls! I over bought when I made this
quilt for my friend, so if it happened to be a girl, I even knew what colors I would plan to use. Once they announced that baby would be an Olivia rather than a Wyatt, I got to work thinking about what her quilt would look like. As much fun as it is to spend hours picking out fabric, wondering whether or not someone will like the color combinations, and then putting it all back to choose something different three more times, I was thankful that I got to skip that step since I already had the fabric, shown in "Baby Girl's" quilt below.

My friend's quilt I made back in September |
I picked out the
pattern, Quilt Dad's "Lap of Luxe" quilt, (which, mind you I found on pinterest and forgot to pin, so I had to go back through and find it! Not an easy task....) and then I got down to business cutting my 8.5 inch blocks.
|
After cutting my 8.5 inch blocks,
I set out to sew some half square triangles!! |
|
24 half square triangles here I come!! |
|
I marked the middle because I can't be trusted to sew straight |
|
Side one = completed. On to side two! |
|
A close up of what a half square triangle in progress looks like
(because I actually remembered to take pictures). |

Baby O's half square triangles, ready to be cut!! |
|
Sliced down the middle and ready to be pressed open/flat... |
|
The pattern says to trim down the half squares to 7 inches. I decided to keep them at 8 to make my quilt a standard crib size, we'll see how it turns out. **Note: I was extremely meticulous in making sure my blocks were even, so I didn't feel like trimming them was necessary. If yours are even slightly uneven they will need trimmed to maintain the triangles!! |

"Just keep sewing, just keep sewing, sewing, sewing" |
Unfortunately half the blocks I sewed that day were sewn on the wrong edge so I had to take out the seams and start over again. (I learned a great lesson in half square triangles that day; it DOES matter which side you sew on for the half square to end up on the angle/pattern you want!!!!) Once I figured out the angle properly *smacks head and grunts* it was smooth sailing from there! More updates on the quilt once it is finished!!
